Hunting Seasons by Animal

Texas has a lot to offer resident and visiting hunters in game and nongame and fur bearing animals. The Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife maintains a list of hunting seasons, core counties and license and stamp requirements for:

  • Alligator ( available in 22 core counties)
  • Chachalaca ( Requires Upland Game Bird Stamp)
  • Dove (Including special White-winged Dove seasons)
  • Duck (Special seasons for youth, falconry and Dusky Duck)
  • Goose (Hunting regulations and requirements vary by type)
  • Javelina (Open season in 43 northern counties and 50 southern counties)
  • Mule Deer (Hunting season in the Panhandle and Southwestern Panhandle. Special Season for archery only)
  • Pheasant (General open season in 37 Panhandle counties)
  • Pronghorn Antelope (Pronghorn Antelope may be hunted only by permit issued to the landowner or landowner’s agent)
  • Quail (Quail may be hunted statewide when during season with required stamp)
  • Rabbits and Hares (Hunt statewide with no closed season)
  • Rails, Gallinules and Moorhens (Hunt statewide with game stamp. Special season for falconry hunts.)
  • Sandhill Crane ( Migratory Game Bird Stamp & Federal Sandhill Crane Permit Required)
  • Squirrel (157 counties with no closed season and no bag limit)
  • Teal (Statewide open season in September with required stamp)
  • Turkey (Spring and Fall Seasons with special seasons for archery and youth hunters)
  • White-tailed Deer (Special Seasons for archery, youth and muzzleloader hunters. Late antlerless and spike available in North and South Texas.
  • Wilson's Snipe also called Common Snipe or Jacksnipe may be hunted statewide in season with stamp.
  • Woodcock (Regular season statewide. Special season for falconry hunters)
A hunting license is required of any person, regardless of age, who hunts any animal, bird, frog or turtle in this state (except furbearers, if the hunter possesses a trapper's license). No license is required for nuisance fur-bearing animals, depredating hogs or coyotes. Non-residents under 17 years of age may purchase and hunt with the Youth Hunting License . . .
