Sucker Rod Smith
"Sucker Rod" Smith was a colorful character that called Lamesa home for many years, later moved to Big Spring. He rode his horse everywhere! He was a frequent customer at the Sky Vue Drive In movie theater (photo shows him on his horse at the snack bar). He would frequent The Majestic Theater downtown and tie his horse up to a tree on the vacant lot next door. I saw him several times tie his horse to a parking meter in front of Jelly's Barber Shop. Later employed as a ranch-hand on the Stockton Ranch near Big Spring, he drowned at age 35 in a stock tank while checking a trot line. He couldn't swim! Word was, he lived in a dugout. . . . photo and historical information courtesy Jerry Cotten |
