Out of Money, Out of Gas, Running Low on Hope

As the only major city on the Texas portion of Route 66, Amarillo was a waypoint for families fleeing the dust bowl. This large family was on the way to New Mexico when they ran out of gas somewhere in Potter County in 1937. A government photographer tasked with documenting the plight of rural families captured the desperation on the faces of of this family. | ||||||
