Ruth Ann Shadd was born in Chatham and raised in
North Buxton. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University
of Windsor. She completed her Masters degree at Wayne State University
in Detroit and has taught at several high schools in the region.
Shadd has completed extensive studies in African Canadian history
and dance. Her book "Breaking Loose: A History of African-Canadian
Dance in Southwestern Ontario, 1900-1955" was published
in 1994. Breaking Loose proves interesting insight into the history
of the region and contains many historic photographs.
