Christopher Paul Curtis was born in Flint, Michigan,
in 1953. Curtis spent thirteen years working on an assembly line
at Fisher Body Plant in Flint. He married Trinidadian born Kay
Sookram and have children Steven and Cydney. Curtis moved to Windsor
in 1985.
In l993 Kaysandra, an intensive-care nurse, offered to support
the family while Christopher took a year off to write his first
book. Curtis sat in the children’s section of the Windsor
Public Library and wrote the

--1963. His son Steven typed the drafts
into their computer and served as first reader. The Watsons Go To Birmingham--1963
was named a Newbery Honor Book in 1996 . Curtis’ second book
Bud, Not Buddy was released in 1999 and was awarded both the Newbury
Medal and the Coretta Scott King Medal, given each year to a black
writer for an inspirational and educational contribution to literature.
His third book Bucking the Sarge was released in 2004. The release
was celebrated at the Windsor Public Library December 4, 2004 where
the Children’s Section of the library is named in his honour.
