David Alexander was born in Windsor, Ontario in 1946.
He studied at the Ontario College of Art and the University of
Toronto. Alexander is also a poet and his poems often accompany
and compliment his visual works. Alexander's subject range includes
Underground Railroad themes and explorations of faith and nature.
In 1982 Alexander invented a new aesthetic-based language called
Yankahla.
David Alexander has been a professional artist for over 30 years. His hand-painted
cards have been presented to Pope John-Paul II and religious leaders |

of both the Jewish and Muslim faiths. Subjects of |
|
hiswork include Underground Railroad themes
and explorations of faith and nature. In 1982
Alexander invented a new aesthetic-based language called Yankahla.
For several years he was a participating artist-fellow of the Patmos Workshop
and Gallery and later the Alpha Gallery, exhibiting throughout southern Ontario.
He is now a high school teacher in Belleville, Ontario and a member of Gallery
121. Alexander currently residents in Stirling, Ontario, and paints in egg tempera,
encaustic, oil, and acrylic. |

Robert
Small |

|
Robert Small was born in Toronto but is an artist
with a Windsor connection. Small completed a degree in Sociology
and a certificate in Criminology from the University of Windsor.
Small was also the Director of the YMCA Black Achievers Program.
Robert Small has been very active in promoting African-Canadian heritage
through art. In 1995, Small created the first Official Black History Month
Poster. This poster celebrates African-Canadian history and the |

|
contributions of African-Canadians. Each year |
|
Small’s work is featured on this
poster and 10,000 colour prints are distributed across
the country. In 2002 Small presented Prime Minister Jean
Chrétien with the poster. |

Russell
Small |

Russell Small is a talented photographer in the Windsor area.
Small established Rustys Photography in 1994 his photographic studio
which provides a wide variety of photographic services. Photographer
Rusty Small began collecting art nearly 15 years ago and is now
the creator and operator of Gallery Grandeur located at 1675 University
Avenue West in Windsor. The gallery, which opened in 2000, is one
of the city’s largest independent galleries. Gallery Grandeur
is open year-round and specializes in contemporary art by local
and internatonial artists including many masks and musical instruments.

Art is very extensive and well known in Windsor and Internationally.

Dennis
Smith |

|
Dennis Smith grew up in Harrow and began a career
in art while still in high school. He worked as an apprentice sign
painter under commercial and portraiture artist Harry Zellic. He
also studied under artists Sergio De Paoli, Bert Weir, Carl Owens
and illustrator Bob Monks. Smith attended Ontario College of Arts
in Toronto. Smith also conducts art classes in his home studio
with an emphasis on “learning to communicate the visual
language of art...”

Figures and
Events mural which commemorates African Canadian history in the region
(See Historic Sites – murals).
Dennis Smith’s recent work features scenes of Essex County.
Dennis also devotes time to community projects and a Christian theatre

Helen Turner Brown |

|
Helen Turner Brown was born in Detroit, Michigan
on July 18, 1939. She moved to the town of Sandwich with her family
at the age of five. Helen attended Western Elementary, Forester
High School, W.D. Lowe and Bulmer Business College. While a student
at Western Elementary school Helen won an art contest which set
her on the path of an artists life.
Helen has created many works which highlight African Canadian heritage. She and
fellow artist Dennis Smith created the Sandwich and Area Black Historical Figures
